Strathpine couple helping to create bright futures

For the past 33 years Anne and Wayne Horne’s home has been a sanctuary for Queensland children in need.

The Strathpine couple have cared for countless children, and say they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’ve never kept count of how many children we have fostered – but it would have to be in the hundreds,” she said.

“I love the fact that you actually get more out of it than you put in – you really do, and I still do.” Ms Horne said she was regularly asked when she would retire from fostering, but she has no plans to give it up yet.

“My husband says he’s never been busier than since he retired,” she laughed.

“The funny thing is we picked up a little one about a month ago from the hospital, and the minute we picked her up I thought I’m so not over doing this yet.”

Ms Horne said to anyone out there considering becoming a foster carer – “just do it”.

“I’d encourage anyone I can to seriously think about becoming a foster carer – the need is there,” she said.

Member for Pine Rivers, Nikki Boyd, thanked the Horne’s for their tireless dedication and commitment to creating brighter futures for some of the state’s most vulnerable children.

“Foster and Kinship Carer Week presents a great opportunity to recognise Anne and Wayne, our local longest-term foster and kinship carers, for their tremendous efforts,” she said.

“Anne and Ken are two of more than 5300 foster carers across the state who provide loving, stable homes for children who are no longer able to live safely at home.

“It is an incredible achievement to be a foster carer for the length of time they have, and I have no doubt they have made the world of difference in the lives of the children who have lived with them.”

“Foster and kinship carers are the backbone of the Queensland child protection system,
and without them we would not be able to provide the response we do to children in
need.”
